In an effort to keep paying customers of its Xbox Live service happy in the lead up to the launch of the Xbox One, Microsoft unveiled its “Games with Gold” program back in June. During each month until the end of the year, the company will distribute two full games for free as downloads on its Xbox Store to all Xbox Live Gold members. The titles offered thus far have been mildly interesting, with a few notable exceptions, but one game planned for October is sure to draw attention: Halo 3.
The October promotion will start Tuesday with the availability of Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes through October 15th, and will then be followed by the 2007 Bungie hit Halo 3, which will be free to download from the 16th through the 31st. Both games are normally available for $15 each.
The Games with Gold program has yet to offer any recent AAA titles, and most players won’t find all of the games interesting, but with a yearly cost of $60 for an Xbox Live Gold membership, the promotion is still a nice bonus and allows gamers to try out Xbox 360 titles they may have missed the first time around.
For those keeping track, here the games offered by Games with Gold thus far:
Although not officially part of Games with Gold, Microsoft also made Fable III free during the last half of June. The program will continue with four more as yet unnamed games, two each for November and December. Xbox Live Gold members can download the games each month during their limited period of availability by accessing the “Games with Gold” tile on the Xbox 360 dashboard or by logging in to Xbox.com with the Microsoft account associated with their Xbox Live Gold subscription.
