Twitter Quietly Testing Pop-Up Notifications for Web Interface

With Twitter doing everything it can to push users to its web interface, the company rightly knows that it will need to improve functionality quite a bit before most heavy users of the service would even consider a transition. It is therefore unsurprising to learn that Twitter is testing a pop-up notification feature for its web interface.

As noticed late Tuesday by Engadget editor Sarah Silbert, Twitter has begun quietly testing the new feature with a select group of users. Those unknowingly participating will see a pop-up notification on the bottom of their browser window whenever they receive a reply or mention while logged in.

The test thus far appears to be very limited; in addition to Ms. Silbert, we’ve only heard from two others who can verify that the new feature is active with their account.

Twitter announced in a blog post last year that the company is frequently “evolving the product” by “testing various features with small groups.” While this is likely just another initial test, we can definitely see the value as more users every day rely upon Web browsers as their primary computing interface.

We’ve reached out to Twitter for comment but have not yet heard back. We’ll update this post if we do. In the mean time, please feel free to let us know if you’re seeing this new, or any other, new feature with your Twitter account.
