Ubuntu, the Linux distribution known for its slick look and ease of installation, just received a major update. Version 13.04, codenamed Raring Ringtail, is available now.
The latest version focuses primarily on under-the-hood improvements and streamlining, making it “the fastest and most visually polished Ubuntu experience to date.” Users of slower or older hardware will notice performance improvements the most, but those with more powerful hardware will still enjoy the visual improvements and tweaks to the user interface.
Performance improvements aside, there are a few new end-user features in 13.04, including improved window management options, better sync and Bluetooth interfaces, and new integration with social media networks that allows users to tweet, file share, and upload photos directly from compatible applications.
Ubuntu is available free now in both 32- and 64-bit versions weighing in at around 800MB. Users are encouraged to donate to the future development of the software if they find it useful. An online guided tour is also available for new users who want to check Ubuntu out before installing it.
