Samsung announced Monday that it plans to unveil a prototype 13.3-inch notebook display with a resolution of 3,200-by–1,800 pixels. If mass produced, the display would give the Korean company’s clients, including its own computer division, significantly higher resolution than currently available on Apple’s Retina MacBook Pros or Google’s Chromebook Pixel.
The current consumer notebook display density champion is the aforementioned Chromebook Pixel, which launched in February with a 2,560-by–1,700 resolution on a 12.85-inch display for a total of about 239 pixels per inch. This barely beat Apple’s MacBook Pro with Retina Display, which comes in a 15-inch model at 220 pixels per inch and a 13.3-inch model with 227 pixels per inch. The Samsung prototype display, categorized as WQXGA+, will take the density to a new record of 276 pixels per inch.
Samsung also announced a new 10-inch display for tablets with a resolution of 2,560-by–1,600 and a pixel density of 302 ppi. This is slightly above the current iPad display, which boasts 264 ppi with a 2,048-by–1,536 resolution.
Both of Samsung’s ultra resolution displays also support up to “30 percent greater power savings” over current designs.
Samsung’s computer displays, along with television and smartphone prototypes, will be showcased during the Society for Information Display’s Display Week 2013, running this Tuesday through Thursday at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
