Apple on Monday announced the next version of OS X. Continuing the new naming theme based on notable California locations, OS X 10.11 will be called El Capitan, the famous Yosemite landmark. Notable new features include:
- Easier window management with improvements to full screen mode via Mission Control, side-by-side window snapping
- New cursor and trackpad gestures
- Improvements to Safari tabs with the ability to “pin” favorite sites and mute audio on a per-tab basis
- Siri-like info in Spotlight (sports scores, weather forecasts), the ability to move the Spotlight window, and system-wide natural language searches
- Performance improvements throughout the operating system, including Metal for OS X
As expected, OS X El Capitan will be a free update for all users will compatible Macs and will launch to the public this fall. Those interested in testing the operating system prior to release can join the public beta program in July. Registered Apple developers can also access OS X El Capitan beta builds via the Apple Developer Center website starting today.
