Native Plex App Now Available for the Xbox One, Xbox 360 “Shortly”

By Jim Tanous on October 7, 2014 at 3:25 PM • @mggjim

Popular media server and playback software Plex is now available on the Xbox One, with an Xbox 360 release “coming shortly,” the development team reported Tuesday. The Xbox One app should be hitting the Xbox Marketplace today and will be free for members of the service’s paid Plex Pass program.

If you’ve been around for a while, you know how much we love bringing the awesome Plex experience to a brand new platform. Whether that means working hard to run on existing devices like the Roku, or working more closely with a partner like Google to bring you a world class Android TV app, we’re always looking for new and cool ways to make sure you can access your media wherever you are on your favorite device. Well today, we’re super excited to announce that Plex is coming to not one, but two new platforms: the Xbox One and Xbox 360!

Features new for the Xbox One release include voice and gesture control via Kinect, a redesigned home screen interface, and smart suggestions when browsing movie and TV content, such as automatically showing other movies from the same director and suggesting shows that the user has yet to watch.

The Xbox One Plex app currently requires a Plex Pass subscription, although those without one will soon be able to purchase the app for a fee after the Plex Pass preview period.

Plex has expanded significantly in recent years, and now allows users to access their media on a variety of platforms including Windows, OS X, iOS, Android, and Roku. Today’s launch of support for the Xbox One marks the first time that Plex has provided native support for the service’s playback client on a game console (although Plex has supported DLNA since 2012, allowing for playback on DLNA-compatible devices like the PS3).
