It’s time for today’s big tablet launch! No, not that one, we’re talking about the new Microsoft Surface 2. While we’re waiting to see what Apple has planned for the 2013 iPad, Microsoft today launched the ARM-powered Surface 2 and Haswell-based Surface Pro 2 in 21 countries. While keeping the same form factor, both models promise noticeably upgraded performance alongside some useful new features and accessories, such as a dual-angle kickstand, power cover keyboard, and full-fledged desktop dock.

The Surface 2 arrives in 32 and 64GB capacities for $449 and $549, respectively, while the Surface Pro 2 features four capacity options of 64, 128, 256, and 512GB at $899, $999, $1299, and $1799, respectively. The 64 and 128GB models include 4GB of RAM while the 256 and 512GB models bump the RAM to 8GB.
The first generation line of Surface tablets failed to gain significant market traction, forcing Microsoft to eventually write off nearly $900 million in unsold inventory earlier this year. With more powerful hardware, better accessories, and a refined operating system, the Redmond company hopes that its second effort will receive a warmer welcome.
