Sales of new PCs have declined for eight straight quarters, but new reports this week from IDC and Gartner show that the losses may finally be leveling off. The saturation of the tablet market the upgrades from millions of Windows XP users paint a slightly brighter picture for the PC industry in 2014.
Smartphone shipment data in China and Taiwan for the fourth quarter of 2013 is out from IDC this week, and reveals the significant market differences between the two countries. Samsung came in number one in China during the quarter with 19 percent, but Apple held strong across the Strait with 30 percent in Taiwan.
The new iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display will arrive just in time to counter the continued decline of Apple’s share of the worldwide tablet market. According to IDC, the iPad’s market share reached an all-time low in the third quarter.
