If your dad uses a computer and doesn’t have an offsite backup strategy, you absolutely have to set him up with one of the online backup companies. We like Backblaze thanks to its ease of use and low fixed pricing ($5 per month or $50 per year for unlimited data from one computer).
It may not sound like an exciting gift at first, but when his computer gets fried by a power surge, washed away in a flood, or simply suffers a typical hardware failure, your dad will sing your praises for giving him a way to recover a lifetime of documents, photos, music, and memories. Remember, everyone, fathers or not, should practice the 3-2-1 method of data backup:
- Three total copies of all important data (the original plus two backups)
- Stored via at least two formats (hard disk, DVD, cloud, etc.)
- With one copy stored offsite.
