EA’s mobile-focused update of the classic game Dungeon Keeper has hardly been welcomed by fans. With tedious new gameplay elements mired in microtransactions and a controversial rating system, Peter Molyneux, the original game’s creator, has called the new version “ridiculous.”
But EA hopes to win some fans back to its side this Valentine’s Day, and has partnered with GOG to offer the original Dungeon Keeper for free until 6:00 AM EST on Sunday.
Interested fans just have to head over to GOG.com, log-in or create a new free account, and then click “Get it Now” on the homepage’s Dungeon Keeper banner. To keep the servers from becoming overwhelmed by high demand, the game won’t be available for download immediately. Instead, GOG will email customers in phases with a download link, ensuring a smooth experience for everyone. Don’t worry if you haven’t received your email by the time the promotion ends on Sunday. As long as you submit your request before the deadline, you’ll still get the game.
Fans will also be happy to learn that GOG has packaged the game so as to be playable on both Windows and OS X. The download also comes with the usual GOG extras, including manuals, original game concept artwork, photos from the development team, and desktop wallpaper.
For those who want even more Dungeon Keeper, GOG is also running a sale on the game’s 1999 sequel which you can pick up for $1.49.
For the uninitiated, Dungeon Keeper is a unique strategy game first released by Bullfrog on the PC in 1997. Players are cast as the “evil” managers of a dungeon who must develop and protect it from invading “heroes.” The game received high ratings upon release, and is widely recognized as a classic in the strategy genre.
